They're stoning Religious Freedoms in America. How disheartened I am as a descendant of early Colonial pastors. Our nation was dedicated to God in Virginia by Rev. Robert Hunt and hallowed by the prayers of Pilgrims on the Mayflower or sanctified by the work of my own ancestral Puritans like Rev. William Witherell of Massachusetts and many others. Now I grieve as Christianity and Jewish foundations and, indeed, religious tolerance everywhere, so interwoven in our foundations, is under attack by those who have no regard for our American Freedoms.

This attempt at obliteration is strikingly surveyed by Todd Starnes in his book GOD LESS AMERICA as he surveys the current War on Christianity through the alleged administration's affiliations with Worldwide Muslim Jihad and Atheistic Socialistic-Communism so seen in our daily news. The hostile proponents do not know or respect America and its foundational freedoms and are actively determined to destroy them along with those who ignorantly ignore so great a heritage. Also ignorant, are those so calloused they will not stand and can not stand to protect her. Every political, civic, educational, religious, commercial, community leader, or citizen should read this book. Or lose full scale through this dumbing of America.

Hundreds of documented examples are illustrated. The book initially mentions the firing of a North Carolina State House Honorary Chaplain for mentioning the name of Jesus in prayer. Senior citizens in Fort Wentworth, Georgia, forbidden to pray over their meals. A federal judge orders the prohibition of prayer at the Medina Valley Independent School District graduation in Texas. An eight year old school boy in Massachusetts is ordered to undergo psychiatric evaluation after he drew a picture of Jesus on the cross. A professor is rejected from working at the university observatory by the University of Kentucky because he is a Christian. Bibles are banned from Walter Reed Medical Center. A New York public school teacher is ordered to remove inspirational Bible quotes from her classroom, and a quote by President Ronald Reagan. This quote read, “I we ever forget that we are one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under.”

Delegates to the 2012 Democratic Convention voted God off the party platform. When authorities ordered him written back for the sake of public relations, the delegates booed God. A secret move was started later by Obama Democrats, termed GOD, said Miles O'Leary of Obama's Office of Theological Repatriation, “It stands for Get Obama Deified.” The task is the process of destabilizing other religions, to marginalize Christianity in the Armed Forces and the public schools. Obama signed the executive order declaring himself to be Lord and Savior. About two minutes later, a small earthquake shook Washington D.C. Miles said screenwriters are employed to write “The Gospel According to Barack.” The Family Research Council and the Liberty Institute have each documented 600 stories of religious hostility, some used by Todd Starnes in writing this packed reference.

How do I see the roots of this attack? A negligent or abusive father causes lack of respect in the home, rebellion against authority, contempt for society, despite for heritage and culture, denial of the rights and freedoms of others, and unbelief in God--other than a narcissistic isolating power love of one's self.

America's Freedoms Lost

This story reflects the Worship and Work heritage of our early Americans. Under attack by socialism, we are now losing our national foundations right before our eyes.

Grandpa Walter Witherell labored hard as mechanic in his garage on the intersection of Massachusetts Route 66 at “the flats.” He served as official State Bee Keeper for many years, handling honey bees with no protective gear. Grandma Laura drove the school bus in Hampshire County through several generations of children. As driver, she delivered the Hampshire Gazette all along the rural route.

Of course, at their farm on the hill she cared for the sheep, milked the cows, sold the apples, and boiled the maple syrup into blocks of sugar. Did you ever eat taffy syrup on fresh fallen snow? Most of all, I remember her wood shed, pantry, and incredible full course, wood stove breakfasts.  

I benefited from observing their basic daily work and spiritual lives. So united were they, at the end of their lives they naturally died one night apart (Oct. 1968), as had his brother and wife, Earnest and Sadie Witherell.

Both were direct descendants of the early American Puritans in the Witherell, Church, and Blakesley ancestry. They worshiped in the Westhampton Congregational Church reflecting the simplicity of the early Puritans who built the foundations of this nation.

This church the townspeople established in 1779 and first built in 1785. Considered “the finest in the hill towns,” a new  church was built in 1816 that burned Feb. 18, 1829, and was immediately rebuilt that year.

The first pastor, Enoch Hale served 58 years. He was the dear elder brother to Capt. Nathan Hale, Washington's Revolutionary spy executed by the British (Sept. 22, 1776).

One member, Justin Edwards,  in a summer thunderstorm prayed with four friends in the Haystack Meeting (1806) which resulted in the founding of the great American Foreign Missions Movement. He served later as president of Andover Theological Seminary.


One ancestor, Rev. William Witherell, was a pastor so renowned in those early days of the Plymouth Colony, his church roll reflects some 608 baptisms. He served as pastor for 39 years from Sept. 2, 1645, till his death, Apr.9, 1685, at the the Second Church of Scituate, now after some 350 years, First Parish of Norwell.

William was born in 1600 and his mother is purported to be the daughter of John Rogers, the Smithfield martyr. William married Mary Fisher, Mar. 26, 1627, in Canterbury, Kent, England. William and Mary arrived in the Plymouth Bay Colony on board the ship Hercules in 1634. He was placed on the ministerial rolls by Cotton Mather.


The story is reported in the church archives that a young man, John Bryant, had a tendency to arrive late to Sunday service. So at an appropriate time following prayer in the service, the Rev. Witherell turned to address him.

“Neighbor Bryant, it is to your reproach that you have disturbed the worship by entering late, living as you do within a mile of this place. Especially since here is Goody Barstow who has milked seven cows, made a cheese and walked five miles to the house of God in good season” (Fewkes, R.M.).

John Bryant was not too put off by the rebuke. He married Pastor Witherell's daughter, Elizabeth, in 1657.

Even this early story reflects the worship and work heritage of these early Americans. I can't help adding, this very worship and work ethic which built America is under such severe attack by socialism, today. We are losing our national foundations right before our eyes.

America’s Most Biblically-Hostile President

When President Obama's hostility toward Biblical people of faith is contrasted with his preferential treatment of Muslims and Muslim nations, it further strengthens the accuracy of the anti-Biblical descriptor.

(David Barton, WallBuilders) When one observes President Obama’s unwillingness to accommodate America’s four-century long religious conscience protection through his attempts to require Catholics to go against their own doctrines and beliefs, one is tempted to say that he is anti-Catholic. But that characterization would not be correct.

Although he has recently singled out Catholics, he has equally targeted traditional Protestant beliefs over the past four years. So since he has attacked Catholics and Protestants, one is tempted to say that he is anti-Christian. But that, too, would be inaccurate.

He has been equally disrespectful in his appalling treatment of religious Jews in general and Israel in particular. So perhaps the most accurate description of his antipathy toward Catholics, Protestants, religious Jews, and the Jewish nation would be to characterize him as anti-Biblical.

And then when his hostility toward Biblical people of faith is contrasted with his preferential treatment of Muslims and Muslim nations, it further strengthens the accuracy of the anti-Biblical descriptor. In fact, there have been numerous clearly documented times when his pro-Islam positions have been the cause of his anti-Biblical actions.

Socialism dictates that man is subservient to the tyranny of the state. Socialism devalues God and the moral code, commerce, finances, the economy, our international security, the family, property rights, education, civil liberties, the justice system, and our whole way of life.

On the other hand, Freedom declares the state protects man's individual rights and initiatives and society as a whole, under God. American culture is seriously threatened by the Communist-Socialism of the current administration. This is a time for intelligent awareness, serious prayer, and political action in America. God Warns a Nation!

When some deny God, it is time for men and women to stand, speak out, and pray.

Our nation is suffering disasters: devastating tornadoes, rampant forest fires, powerful hurricanes, earthquakes, immense flooding, not to mention murderous crimes, military deaths, and such. More than once I've heard a person ask, “Is this an Act of God? Does he cause it?”

There are many who mirthfully laugh at such a suggestion, considering all Acts of God as accidental consequences. But walking closer with God, others recognize the truth as in Ben Franklin's statement to his compatriots during the stalled progress of the Constitutional Convention in 1787.

And have we now forgotten

that powerful friend?

Or do we imagine that we no longer need his assistance? I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth-that God governs in the affairs of men.

No, God himself is not the author of evil! The God of perfect goodness and perfect justice is compelled to withdraw his hand of mighty Blessing and protection in the face of man's horrible wickedness and sin. It is the prince of evil who comes “to steal, kill, and destroy.”

For instance, how dare Mayor Michael Bloomberg block God from the 9-11 NYC Memorial Service in violation of our heritage and our national motto, “In God We Trust?” We grieve for our nation so consecrated to God by our colonial forefathers.

“Blessed is the nation whose 

  God is the Lord” (Ps 33:12).

When our president denies our national godly heritage and political leaders work to establish laws against the moral commands of God and to destroy the elements of our founding Constitution, they trespass. The denial of God blocks the blessings to our nation in health, prosperity, and victory. We grieve for our nation.

“No king is saved by the size of his army” (Ps 33:16).

Nahum warned Nineveh again, a hundred years after Jonah, of God's wrath against the guilty in the power of whirlwind, storm, drought, earthquake, fire, and overwhelming flooding (Nahum 1:2-8). This time Nineveh did not listen and destruction came about 663 BC.

Ben Franklin further warned.

I also believe that without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in the political building no better than the builders of Babel; we shall be divided by our little, partial local interests; our projects will be confounded; and we ourselves shall become a reproach and a byword down to future ages.

And what is worse, mankind may hereafter from this unfortunate instance, despair of establishing government by human wisdom and leave it to chance, war, or conquest.

What is happening? If we wish to heed the warning, we must acknowledge the God in whom we trust.

“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chron 7:14 NKJV).

When some deny God, it is time for men and women to stand, speak out, and pray.

“He cares for those who trust in him” (Nahum 1:7 NKJV).

George Washington's Christian Faith

George Washington's Christian faith can no more be called into question than his American patriotism.

A young “Red Coat”, age 23, rides fiercely in the midst of severe battle delivering the orders of his dying general as his unit is whipped by shots from every side. Four bullets rip into his jacket and two horses are shot out from under him. But he is not wounded. In acts of desperation he encourages his men to retreat and survive, saving the lives of many by his courage. He is the only officer still mounted on horseback out maneuvering the hail of bullets.

Miraculously, he rides. 63 of 86 officers are killed or wounded in the French and Indian ambush along the Monongahela River. The date is July 9, 1775. George Washington served as volunteer aide-de-camp to British General Edward Braddock then gasping for life. The ambush occurred just seven miles short of their objective, Fort Duquesne.

“Protected by the angels,” 

his countrymen said.

Washington lived to serve the Colonies in the Continental Congress, then as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, president of the Constitutional Convention, first President of the United States, and was ultimately proclaimed “Father of His Country.”

Nelly Curtis Lewis wrote a letter to historian Jared Sparks explaining Washington's faith, dated 2/26/1833. Nelly was the Washington's granddaughter but was raised by them from birth at Mount Vernon for twenty years after her own father died. She called George and Martha her “beloved parents whom I loved with so much devotion.”

Nelly told how the Washington's attended the beautiful Mount Vernon Pohick Church where George served as vestryman. His pew was near the pulpit. When serving the colonies in Alexandria, he attended Christ Church. In New York and Philadelphia, she wrote, he never omitted attending church. “No one in church attended to the services with more reverential respect.”

At home, George rose before the sun and remained in his library until breakfast. He was not one of those who prayed to be seen by men. Nelly said at times she noticed his lips moving, but no sound was perceptible. Martha, herself, never omitted her private devotions. George Washington was a devout Episcopalian.

“I now make it my earnest prayer that God would...most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of the mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion,” Washington stated in his closing address to Congress.

Honest Abe Lincoln Stands Tall

Abe Lincoln was respected as a tremendous statesman of character who avidly read his Bible and kept it with him.

“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” President Abraham Lincoln is famous for his honesty across the ages, a quality our fellow Americans appreciate more and more as we find it less and less in today's situational politics. As such, he proved himself less a politician and more a statesman.

Once, a store owner, Mr. Offut, hired the young Lincoln to serve as clerk in his country store in New Salem, Illinois. The tall 6'4” young man was a good salesman, and the customers liked him. Mr. Offut bragged his clerk knew more than anyone else, and that he could outrun and out-wrestle any man in the county.

People nicked name him “Honest Abe” because he set an example of integrity. As a store clerk, Lincoln overcharged one lady customer six cents and walked three miles to settle the debt. Another time, he left a small weight on the scale while pricing tea and again walked a distance next morning to return the right amount of tea. Several stories of his honesty followed him through his legal and political career.

“No man ever had fewer advantages than Abraham Lincoln,” wrote author James Baldwin. “As a boy, he was the poorest of the poor. No rich friend held out a helping hand. But see what he had already accomplished by pluck, perseverance, and honesty! He was very awkward and far from handsome, but he was so modest, so unselfish and kind, that every one who knew him liked him. He was a true gentleman—a gentleman at heart, if not in outside polish.”

Lincoln began his political career when he was elected to the Illinois State Legislature at the age of 22. Two years later, the people re-elected him for a second term. 
 
He was ultimately sworn in as president on March 4, 1861, and fought four years against an onslaught of counter-mixing opinions to preserve the nation against all odds. He met the humane purpose of the war head-on with the Emancipation Proclamation to free the slaves. 


On November 19, 1863, Lincoln delivered a most eloquent speech, the Gettysburg Address, over a terrain littered with thousands of Civil War dead from both sides. 
 

“He had not had access to many books, but he knew books better than most men of his age. He knew the Bible by heart; he was familiar with Shakespeare; he could repeat nearly all the poems of Burns; he knew much about physics and mechanics; he had mastered the elements of law.” Lincoln avidly read his Bible and kept it with him. 
 

“In regard to this Great Book, I have but to say, it is the best gift God has given to man. All the good the Savior gave to the world was communicated through this book” (Baltimore, 1864). 
 

“Neither party expected for the war, the magnitude, or the duration which it has already attained,” he commented on the Civil War.
